Holy Communion is a wonderful gift of God. In it He assures you in a very personal way that you are forgiven. When you receive the bread and wine, the true body and blood of Jesus, there is no doubt who is being forgiven. You are! Various senses confirm it: sight and smell, taste and touch. In Holy Communion God blesses you through yet another vehicle to deliver His grace, His gift of life, forgiveness, and salvation.
In addition, God gives us the promise that, as we receive His gift, we are proclaiming Jesus’ death until He comes again (see 1 Corinthians 11:26). Holy Communion then, is not only a gift of grace, but a confession of faith.
As doctrinal oneness is central to this common proclamation, the churches of The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod have promised to practice “close” communion. For this reason, we ask guests who desire to commune to speak with the pastor before the service.
One more piece of helpful information... At Our Savior, we use the “common cup” for the distribution of the wine. Every communicant receives the wine from this common cup, a symbol of Christian unity. If you prefer, however, you may simply dip your wafer of bread into the cup rather than drinking directly from it and in that way partake of both the bread and the wine of the Lord’s Supper.
